Card payment declined
Most declines come from an insufficient card balance. Your card only spends its Spendable amount, not the total balance shown in the app.
Updated October 1, 2026
Common causes
- Insufficient card balance
- Merchant category not supported
- Temporary network hiccups
- Local restrictions for card programs
- Frozen card
- Incorrect Apple Pay / Google Pay setup
Check your Spendable balance, not your total
Your card spends only the Spendable amount shown at the top of the card screen. The total balance in the app adds up your Wallet, Card and Savings, so it can be higher than what the card can actually use. Money sitting in your Solid Wallet or Savings is not used by the card until you move it onto the card.
If a merchant or terminal says the card has no balance while your total looks higher, compare the purchase amount with your Spendable amount.
Deposits under $10 don't reach the card
Card deposits must be at least $10. A deposit under $10 sent to your card goes to your Solid Wallet instead and shows as Sent to Safe. Nothing is lost, but the card can't spend it. To use it on the card, move it onto the card, or make a card deposit of $10 or more. See How to deposit money onto your Solid Card.
What to do
- Go to Card and confirm:
- your Spendable balance covers the purchase
- whether the card is frozen
- Try again with Apple Pay/Google Pay or a physical number entry
- Try another merchant to isolate the issue
Gas stations may run a balance check of about $175 before approving a payment, so a card with less than that can be declined at the pump. See Card fees & limits.
If payments continue to fail, contact us with:
- merchant name
- amount
- timestamp
